Thailand Cuisine, Culture and Traditions

Thailand is certainly one of the countries in the world that is worth visiting. The Thai culture encompasses cultural beliefs and characteristics which are indigenous to the area that is nowadays known as modern day Thailand. Yet, there are several influences from ancient India, Cambodia, China and other Southeast Asia countries. The Thailand culture is mainly influenced by Hinduism, Animism, and Buddhism.

One of the integrative parts of the Thailand culture is certainly the Thai cuisine. Thai food is well known thanks to the ability of the indigenous to blend to fundamental tastes: sweet through sugar and fruits, spicy through chillies, sour through lime and tamarind and salt through fish sauce and soy sauce. Most of the traditional Thai dishes combine most or all of the fundamental tastes. The most commonly used herbs and spices include chilli, galangal, lime, basil, sweet basil, lemongrass, turmeric, garlic, coriander and shallot.

When it comes to the customs in Thailand one should know that one of the most distinctive customs is the wai. The wai is in many ways similar to the Indian Namaste gesture which shows greet, farewell or acknowledgement. It generally involves a prayer-like gesture and a bow of the head. At the same time, physical demonstrations of affection in public are common between friends but couples rarely show their affection in public. This is however much more commonly seen in westernized areas.
